The golf grip plays a key part in golf and is the foundation of which a great golf swing can be built. There’s no question that learning even the basics of the grip will get any player on the right track to straighter more consistent golf shots, and should not be overlooked when it comes to developing your golf swing.

Here are a few golf grip tips that will hopefully get you on the right track to hitting better more consistent golf shots:

1. Grip Pressure

A common mistake most players make when gripping their golf club is holding it to tightly. The correct grip pressure should be tight enough to take the weight of the club through the golf swing but loose enough to allow you to swing through your golf shot in a fairly relaxed way. Holding your golf club to tight will ultimately give you a less relaxed swing causing a loss of distance and accuracy in your golf shot. To put it simply, on a scale of 1 to 10, (1 being a loose golf grip and 10 being a tight golf grip) the correct grip pressure would probably be around a 5 or a 6. A good golf grip will ultimately result in a more relaxed golf swing and increased clubhead speed resulting in more distance and accuracy when hitting your golf shot.

The Overlapping Grip (The Vardon Grip)

The Interlocking Grip

The Baseball Grip

Usually when deciding what grip type to use for your golf swing, most players would be advised to choose a grip that feels comfortable and right for them. But just incase your having trouble choosing, here are a few key point to consider.
The overlapping grip is where the little finger on your right hand sits on top of your forefinger and middle finger on your left hand. This grip is generally used by golfers with larger hands and is probably the most common of the 3 grips because it makes it easier to keep your grip as light as possible when swinging.
The interlocking grip is where the little finger on your right hand is interlocked with the forefinger on your left hand. This grip is good because it feels a lot more like the hands are working together as one, and is probably best suited for players who’s hands are slightly smaller.
The last grip to consider is the baseball grip. This is where the little finger on the right hand sits next to the forefinger on the left hand. Like the interlocking grip, this grip is better suited for golfer’s with smaller hands and for some golf players tends to be the most comfortable.

3. Gripping the Golf Club

Before going in to details about how to grip the golf club, it is important to remember that the clubhead should be facing the target line of where you want to hit your golf shot. With this task completed, the next step is to let the golf club sit on your left hand making sure the club sits between the palm of your hand and the base of your fingers. This is an essential part of achieving a great golf grip because if the golf club is held mostly in the palm of the hand it can cause a very inconsistent golf swing.
With the golf club in place the next thing you need to do is wrap your hand around the club. It is important to remember that you make sure that the clubhead is still facing the target and that the thumb and forefinger form a V shape pointing towards your right shoulder. If your golf grip is correct you should be able to see between 2 to 3 knuckles visible on your left hand.
With your left hand in the correct position all you need to do now is bring your right hand in as if you were shaking hands with the club. When doing this try to keep your left thumb covered by the base of you right thumb and remember that the back of your right hand should be square to the target. And also remember to use one of the 3 grip types discussed earlier in this article, whatever feels comfortable for you.

Now that you have the correct golf grip you should be well in you way to hitting a longer, straighter more consistent golf drive.

Here are a few golfing tips for your golf club swing to help you get started in you golf adventure. Remember golf is a game of misses. Make sure that you start the downswing of your golf club swing with your hips, not your shoulders. After your hips start turning the rest of the body will follow. Just turn your hips toward the target and hold the hinge in your wrists as long as possible. Your power comes from the body, not the arms. Once you start to turn keep turning until your body is facing the target. You will notice that if you turn, and don’t sway or lean, you will hit the ball with good contact and it will be going towards the target. Try to keep you head quiet during the entire move, that should keep you from bouncing. Also, look at and see the ball when the club hits it.

If you don’t see the club hit the ball then you are turning your head too soon to see where the ball goes and you probably just hit the top of the ball, Booo Hisss.

That’s the tip for today, remember to use an easy golf swing, not too hard, and most importantly have fun.  Here is a golfing tip that a friend of mine gave me. When you make your backswing make sure that you take the golf club up and not around, to the right, of your body. The club has to go up in the air, if you haven’t been doing this then it will feel very strange, go as straight up as you can. Have a friend check it for you. You see when you swing the club around your body you are setting yourself up for a pretty good slice. Think up and down, this will give you the greatest chance for a straight shot. There you have it, easy golfing tips to straighten out your slice.

In order to hit a shot with good contact, and accuracy, you must maintain the same constant pressure with your hands on the golf club during the entire swing.

Most people loosen their grip at the top of the back swing and then tighten their grip on the downswing. Try real hard to avoid this, if you have a grip with both hands on the club of about a six, on a one to ten scale, keep that same pressure on the club during the entire swing. There have been allot of articles written about keeping your left arm straight or relaxed on the back swing.  I’ll tell you from experience that you must absolutely keep your left arm totally straight during your back swing. Why? If you do’t keep your arm straight you will change the arc of your swing thereby making it very difficult to get square to the ball at impact. Think about it, make your back swing with your left arm straight and notice how close your hands are to your head.

Now, make your back swing and relax or bend your left arm, I’ll bet that you’ll find that it came closer to your head, which means that your swing arc changed. Watch the pro golfers on TV, men or women, and you will quickly see that they all keep their left arm dead straight on the back swing. Try this golfing tip the next time you’re out there, and I’m sure you’ll notice a better golf swing with your left arm straight, because it will force you to rotate your shoulders and body for more power.. Instead of chasing a perfect golf swing, my advice is to focus on perfecting your fundamentals. This will make you much more consistent and you’ll be able to lower your golf scores. Trying to find some magic secret in your golf swing might never happen and you could get worse from trying to find something new all the time.

Perfectly your golf swing fundamentals will go a long way in helping your play better golf. Even the pros spend lots of time working on their golf setup and swing basics. Many players will put a club down at the driving range parallel to their target line. Placing a club down in between your feet and the golf ball will help you get your feet lined up correctly. Once your feet are square, then you can more easily square up your hips and shoulders so they match this same line.

A good setup will allow the golf club to more naturally swing on the correct swing path. Problems in the setup will always lead to problems or having to compensate in the golf swing. Mastering your grip and setup is about 50% of the battle of having a good golf swing. Other things that will help you play better golf are focusing on having good tempo throughout your golf swing. Letting the club swing as opposed to lifting, steering, or guiding the club too much will help you hit better shots as well. The golf swing is a swing which is a dynamic and fluid motion. Trying to steer the club or put it into the right positions will hinder your ability to hit good golf shots.

Also, trying to steer or lift the club will cause you to exert way too much effort which is really unnecessary. For example, if the golf club is swing on plane at the top of your backswing, the club should be over the tip of your right shoulder. If your club is too flat or laid off, it will be too far around your body at the top of your swing. If the club is too steep, it is too high and over your head or neck. Getting the club over your right shoulder at the top of the backswing while maintaining a proper arc will help you hit straighter golf shots. If your golf swing is too flat, it would be helpful to swing the club a little higher on the backswing and try to feel it getting more vertical. If you keep working on this, you can overdo it eventually so you want to make sure you are getting the club over the right shoulder. If you kept trying to swing the golf club more vertically, it would eventually get too steep and you would have other problems develop.

Golf is a balance. Working on perfecting your fundamentals will help you play better golf more consistently. Chasing after the perfect swing may cause you more stress than you need and can lead to develop swing problems because of trying too hard. Make a list of the fundamentals you need to work on and go over them from time to time. You will find your swing improving and your golf scores lowering as a result.
